GILBERT ROGIN (1929-2017) was born in New York. Throughout the 1960s and ’70s, he was a prolific contributor of fiction to the New Yorker and other national magazines. In addition to his two novels, What Happens Next? and Preparations for the Ascent, he is the author of a short-story collection, The Fencing Master. 

As a journalist, Rogin worked for thirty years at Sports Illustrated, ultimately as managing editor; he later worked as editor of Discover, corporate editor of Time Inc., and editorial director of Miller Publishing.
